CNC Machining Skill Standard
Wood Digest and Madison Area Technical College have teamed up to present this series on Skills Standards. This is part 7 in a series of 12.

NESTED-BASED CNC MACHINING CENTERS

OPERATION — ROUTING AND BORING

Level 1

Given a CNC nested-based machine that is properly set up and adjusted, calibrated with the correct CNC tooling, and stock present, machine part(s).

Performance Standard
• Inspects spoil board.
• Locates and loads the stock for machining.
• Activates vacuum system and assures stock is properly secured.
• Dimension tolerance is within ±0.004 in. [0.1mm].
• Removes finished piece and clears machine for next run.

Level 2

Given the CNC nested-based machine, set up the machine and tooling, and machine part(s) to specifications.

Performance Standard
• Replaces/resurfaces spoil board when necessary.
• Modifies existing programs if required.
• Organizes panels to match programs.
• Enters tool values into the tool database.
• Determines machining accuracy and quality of cut.
• Identifies and resolves machine operation faults.
• Selects machine operation functions and options.
• Installs and calibrates tooling.
• Meets Level 1 performance standard.

Level 3

Given the CNC nested-based machine, program and set up the machine and tooling, and machine part(s) to specifications.

Performance Standard

Programming
• Writes program for parts.
• Programs nested panel designs.
• Designs and constructs unique part fixtures.

Troubleshoot Product
• Verifies finished product measurements to design specifications.
• Verifies tooling is processing within ±0.004 in. [0.1mm].
• Analyzes and corrects machining defects (quality of edges, holes).
• Meets Level 1 and Level 2 performance standards.

OPERATION — PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Cleaning, repairing, lubricating, replacing, tightening, dressing, adjusting, calibrating, fine-tuning, checking, leveling, verifying, testing, aligning, inspecting, identifying,

Level 1

Performs routine maintenance, such as:

Troubleshoot Machine
• Use machine diagnostics to resolve operation issues.
• Calibrate machine functions to within ±0.004 in. [0.1mm].
• Communicate with vendor’s technical support.
• Use machine electrical schematics.

Preventive Maintenance
• Clean machine filters.
• Lubricate.
• Inspect machine components.

As you can see, there is still information yet to be included in this standard. We could use your expertise! The standards are a work in progress. Please consider joining our organization and contributing your skills. The most recent version of the CNC Machining Center Skill Standard and numerous others can be accessed at: www.skillstandards.wikispaces.com or via the WCANA website: www.woodworkcareer.org.

The WCANA is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization actively promoting a skilled workforce for the advanced woodworking industry in the United States and Canada. We are developing Skill Standards as a means to support the woodworking industry in preparing productive woodworkers. The long-term goal of the WCANA is to develop a voluntary assessment program which will allow woodworkers to demonstrate their competency and earn credentials that are recognized nationwide. If you would like to get involved, please visit the website above, or contact Greg Heuer, WCANA secretary, at gheuer212@me.com.

The work is funded in part through a grant awarded by the Wood Education and Resource Center, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
